High Hopes for the Texas Flash Flood

Reuters.com presented the following Wednesday evening on the ongoing disaster:

"Floods damaged about 4,000 structures and snarled transport in Houston, the fourth most-populous U.S. city, where more than a thousands vehicles were trapped in rising water...The storms [also] dealt a blow to air travel in the region with nearly 240 flights canceled as of 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT) at airports in Dallas and Houston, which are among the nation's busiest.

Help Central Texas Flood Victims

The National Weather Service issued flash flood watches for parts of North Texas and large sections of Oklahoma.  Near Dallas, police evacuated people living near a dam that had threatened to burst due to surging floodwaters. Water topped the dam and police ordered people living downstream to evacuate and move livestock to higher ground.

About 11 inches (28 cm) of rain fell in Houston on Monday, while parts of Austin were hit by as much as 7 inches (18 cm)."

All of the state of Texas is obviously in need of hopes, prayers, and assistance in this time of tragedy.  Please keep endangered and surviving families in your hearts.  We hope everyone is able to recover quickly once the disaster ends.

How To Find The Right Swimming Pool Contractor in Austin, TX

Finding a good swimming pool contractor can be a daunting experience and somewhat intimidating if you don't know what you're doing. The most important thing you can do is to take the time to research and qualify your contractor to ease your stress and ensure that the job will be successful. It is important to understand the steps necessary to find and hire the right contractor for any home improvement project.

1) Start asking friends, neighbors and Facebook for referrals. This will give you firsthand experience about the contractor's quality of work. Referrals are a great source of information.

2) With the list of swimming pool contractors you have obtained, start researching each one. The most important tip on deciding on a good swimming pool contractor is to look for a contractor that is well established in the Austin, TX area, has been in business for many years and has a lot of experience in the project you are planning. Also the biggest ad in the phone book is not necessarily the best choice to make.

3) Research your swimming pool contractors by calling the local Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, and Building Department to find out if any complaints have been filed. Be wary of companies that are new and inexperienced as they will usually cause you problems in the end.

4) Check review sites like Facebook, Google Plus and Yelp for any reviews the swimming pool contractor may have.

5) Now you have all the information you need to be an informed consumer. The next step is to call the swimming pool contractor. This will give you a first impression. Did the contractor return your call promptly? Was the contractor pleasant and courteous? Did he take the time to explain everything to your satisfaction? Did the contractor set up an appointment within a reasonable time? Most importantly did the contractor seem interested?

6) During the initial phone conversation ask a few questions such as, Do you have the required insurance, license and bonding? How long have you been in business? What is your specialty and how soon can you start?

7) Meet with the swimming pool contractor and provide him with a clear and detailed description of your swimming pool project. You can never provide enough information. Make sure the contractor knows exactly what you want and expect, never assume anything. Pay attention to his body language and voice tone. Remember, you must feel comfortable working with this person.

8) Require a detailed estimate. Get a complete description of all materials. The estimate should include a start date and a reasonable finish date. If you request any changes during the project, make sure you get an updated document in writing that shows exactly what changes have to be done and the extra cost.

9) Get a copy of the swimming pool contractor's certificate of insurance, name of the insurance company and phone number. Contact the insurance company and verify his insurance. Get at least three references and call them. Ask them if they were satisfied and if the job was completed in a timely manner.

10) Compare all the estimates and make sure each one contains the same information. If they don't then they are not similar. Choosing the lowest bid is usually not a good idea, remember, you get what you pay for. Finally, you have (3) days to cancel most contracts if you have any doubts.

California Pools - Austin, TX Construction Checklist

Use this checklist when you begin to collaborate with your builder on the construction of your pool.

✓ Planning (Austin, TX swimming pool contractor)

Your pool should reflect your personality and style, along with your location and budget.  Before any work begins, your APSP member professional will help you decide on a design and construction plan. Review your needs and goals. Consider the setting and any irregular land features. And examine the complete plan before digging begins. Ask questions and voice concerns.

✓ The Right Professional (Austin, TX swimming pool company)

You're looking for quality performance, skill, professionalism, reliability and the finest in customer service. APSP member professionals are available to answer your questions and serve your needs. And APSP Certified Professionals have demonstrated their commitment to enhanced education and an adherence to a stringent Code of Ethics.

✓ Location, Location, Location ((Austin, TX swimming pool builder)

Where will your new pool and spa be located? Consider the overall design of your yard and home. Your APSP member professional may take photographs, make sketches or even videotape your setting to properly customize your pool.

✓ Review Costs (Austin, TX pool contractor)

When examining pool and spa construction cost estimates, consider all the factors:

  • Professional, experienced craftsmanship with superior customer service
  • Quality of materials
  • Design
  • Time required for construction and installation
  • Warranties

✓ Settle on a Design

An APSP member professional will meet with you to discuss your needs and desires and how to answer them with a variety of designs, shapes, sizes, and optional features. How will you and your family use your pool? Will it be for relaxation, family and friend gatherings, entertaining, exercise, or any combination of these? When you design your pool, answer your specific needs with a range of features from water treatments and fiber-optic lighting to decking, gazebos, landscaping, fencing and more.

✓ Excavation and Wall Construction (Austin, TX pool builder)

For pool and spa construction, site preparation comes first. Depending on the style and size of pool you choose, this may include excavation and/or forming a steel wall or other reinforcement, as well as adding dirt, gravel, or other materials to help smooth the pool floor and sides.

✓ Interior, Plumbing, and Electrical

The builder you select will place a liner or add a gunite or concrete pool surface. When the interior is complete, the builder installs the lip or cap known as coping around the edge of the pool and finalizes plumbing and electrical work.

✓ Add Water and Enjoy

With basic construction complete, work on the deck or concrete surround is finished. Landscapers can now enhance your backyard oasis with options from new trees, gardens, and plantings to rock walls and paths. Now all that’s left to do is just add water!
